PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County man employed by the fiscal court lost his job and was taken to jail, following a series of events while he was at work. State troopers were called to the courthouse Monday, over a report that Andrew Thomas Smith, 22, of Virgie, had been growing progressively more violent. PHELPS, Ky. — A Pike County man already under indictment for a stabbing was arrested again last week, after a man complained that he shot his dog. The animal’s owner contacted Kentucky State Police on Thursday, saying Cody Wright, 22, of Phelps, had shot his dog while it was on the owner’s property. The man told police he had recently purchased a piece of property at the intersection of Route 194 and Rockhouse Road, and that Wright would routinely cut through his property, either walking or in a vehicle, even though he had told him to stop. PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Pike County is continuing to distribute free weather radios this week. The county received a hazard mitigation grant to hand out 5,000 of the radios. Areas targeted for the giveaways are places that have historically received flooding, as well as areas where cell phone service can be spotty. The radios will be available at the following times and locations: The radios are preset to the areas where residents live and will provide information about forecasts, watches and warnings.

McCARR, Ky. — A Pike County man is dead following a side-by-side crash over the weekend. It happened just before midnight on Saturday. According to Kentucky State Police, Dalton Mounts, 29, of Freeburn, was operating a Polaris RZR on Route 1056, when the vehicle left the roadway and overturned. A passenger on the side-by-side, Michael Sincell, 28, of Freeburn, died at the scene. KSP continues to investigate the incident.
